November 2009
Footwear
Reminder! - Please have your student pack gym shoes on days when they
wear boots to school and have PE.
In November and December, we continue our focus on
competitive
team games, including some of our favorite sports: hockey and
basketball. We want students to learn that their team’s outcome is
directly related to their personal effort, and we hope to introduce
students to two of the world’s most popular sports and help them acquire
the basic skills they need to begin a lifetime of enjoyment.
Grades 3, 4 and 5 are completing their annual fall
Fitnessgram assessment. They
are testing themselves on running endurance (The Pacer), on muscle
strength (pushups, curl-ups and trunk lift), and on stretching
flexibility.
Lower grades are doing a unit on throwing. We find that
many students come to school without having learned the basics of
throwing. We separate throwing from catching skills (since they are
quite distinct), and we practice the various elements of a good throw:
opposition, extension, eye focus, power and control.
Mr. Nakamichi's kinders will be doing a variety of
obstacle courses - working on large motor skills, movement in
space, and cooperation with others in achieving a common task. Mr.
N's third graders will be introduced to Tchoukball, a fun and
fast-moving game that is totally new in this country.
For the second year, Mr. Mokin will be doing yoga
in some PE classes. Yoga is unequalled in its ability to develop
balance, flexibility and awareness of the body in space, and it
addresses the “non-locomotor” component of EALR 1.0 “Active Life:
Movement” of the Issaquah School District Health & Fitness Scope and
Sequence.

Basically we do different stretches and balance
positions with an awareness of breathing. Breathing is related to heart
rate, and we have been emphasizing heart knowledge and heart rate
awareness for the past three years. There is no cultural or religious
element to our yoga practice at school.
We have coupons for ONE remaining UW sporting
event, so hurry over to Challenger ASAP to get yours. They are just like
free tickets. There is a limit of two coupons per family per event. If
you call Ms. D’Alo at 837-7552 at the front desk, you may arrange to
have your son or daughter pick them up for you. Here are the details:
