Fourth Grade Curriculum

Social Studies:

  • Geography of the world, then concentrate on Washington State and government.  Textbook:  Discovering Washington.

  • Pacific Rim:  China and Japan with a field trip to the International District.

  • Novels:  Horse's Tale, In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson, and There's an Owl in the Shower

Science:

  • Geology:  volcanoes and plate tectonics. 

  • Flight:  A field trip to the Flight Museum and the novel The Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk.

  • Astronomy:  To Space and Back with Sally Ride and a field trip to the BCC Planetarium.

  • Environmental studies with Kate Poaster.

Mathematics:

  • Everyday Math: Review, graphing, geometry, numbers and operations, multiplication, prediction, place value, measuring, decimals, division, and fractions. Everyday Math Parent Homeroom

Reading:

  • Class novels, starting with Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing by Judy Blume, book reports, Eager Reader, Scholastic book orders, the Accelerated Reader Program, and McGraw-Hill reading curriculum.

Writing:

  • Focus on the 6 Writing Traits:  Organization, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions, Ideas and Content, and Voice. 

  • Types of writing include:  paragraphs, summaries, reports, poetry, journals, and stories.
